How to maintain your garage door opener
Garage-door openers require periodic (seasonal) maintenance to ensure safe and efficient operation.
Inspect your automatic garage door opener monthly for proper operation and safety. Test the force setting of the opener by holding up the bottom of the door as it closes (if your garage door doesn’t reverse readily, the force needs adjusting). Check the owner’s manual on how to adjust the force sensitivity. Perform the reversing test by placing a small hard object (such as a piece of 2 x 4 piece of wood) in the door’s path and activate your garage door. If the door fails to stop immediately and reverse after impact with the object, disconnect the opener and use only use the door manually until the system is fixed.
Inspect garage door springs, cables, and rollers for signs of worn, damaged or broken parts. The springs and connected hardware are under high tension and can cause severe injury if handled improperly. If you have a problem with these parts, you need to call a professional.
Rollers, springs, hinges, tracks require periodic lubrication.
Periodically test the balance of your garage door.
